TT Bike or Road bike for the St. George Ironman?

Hello!

We have a tri club member wondering whether it would be better to ride a Tri bike or a Road Bike for the St. George Ironman. This is not the first time I've heard this question. The hills in this race course are making many triathletes think twice! Please leave a comment with your opinion and/or answer the poll! Thanks!

  1. I am riding my tri bike regardless of the course. There is still plenty of time to get into the aero position and benefit from it. If you are going to change anything, change out your rear cassette. I did Vineman last year and there were lots of people asking the same question because of the rolling hills on that course. My training buddy took 4th overall at Silverman and has said that training on and using a tri bike for St. George (which he will also be racing) will be fine. I am sure you know this already, but just make sure all your training rides are on the bike that you use. Good luck with your choice.

  2. On a course like that I'm not sure it would matter too much either way. Try them both and see which one works best for you. You will be on the bike a LONG time, so choose the one that is most comfortable and/or has the best climbing gears.

  3. Totally using a tri bike with good rear climbing cassette. The whole race is not on hills, tri bikes (if fit right) are more comfortable and easier to deal with in terms of packing nutrition...AND if there is wind, which is likely, you will thank yourself for being able to hide out underneath it to some extent. Those are my thoughts, but I am also not a roadie converted into a triathlete...which skews my opinion a bit.
